Samba in the Souk
'Samba in the Souk' is an encore piece for solo Double Bass that mixes Latin rhythms and Arabic modes to establish a unique blend and sound. The piece evokes the energy and atmosphere of a ‘Souk’ (the Arabic word for market).
‘In the heart of an ancient city, a bustling souk fills narrow alleys with stalls of carpets, lanterns, and spices. Vendors call out in a medley of languages, haggling and weaving history into a vibrant tapestry of sights, sounds, and scents.’
This work is designed to be an encore piece for a virtuosic double bassist utilising a variety of extended and difficult techniques such as percussion sounds, thumb position in the upper register, harmonics, glissando, scordatura and col legno battuo.
